How-to Videos: Quick Tips on Using Giving Planner
The Giving Planner is a free online tool to manage your donations and volunteering. We all want to make the most impact with our charitable giving, but giving strategically can be a challenge without the right tools. In the absence of a simple way to set goals, plan, and track giving, many may apply the “peanut butter approach” to philanthropy, spreading resources thinly across many causes. Historically there has been a lack of tools and technology to assist donors in strategic giving.
We built the Giving Planner as a tool to help donors track, plan, analyze and benchmark their giving. The app brings all types of giving into one place: volunteer hours, cash and in-kind donations. To create a giving plan, you select focus areas you are passionate about — like Clean Energy, Women & Girls or Economic Development — and establish a giving budget after seeing benchmarking data that the Planner offers.
Giving Planner draws upon data from 3.5 million IRS records and a proprietary algorithm both for benchmarking and to inform each donor’s Giver Score. You receive real-time feedback on your giving behavior through the score — it increases as contributions are added and when you spend time analyzing your giving or learning through the philanthropy content sourced from Giving Compass.
In addition to meeting the practical needs of tracking your giving, Giving Planner encourages donors to budget for unplanned, responsive requests that often come via community relationships and for disaster-related giving. It also reinforces the habit of creating an annual giving plan and monitoring progress: regularly analyzing progress towards giving goals and benchmarking against peers are simple and encouraged in the tool.
Without clear goals, it can be hard for donors to know if you’re putting your money where your mouth is. We hope Giving Planner offers useful, practical support, helping you take great strides on your journey to giving with impact. Try Giving Planner now and share your feedback!
