Nikole Collins-Puri, former CEO of Techbridge Girls and founding CEO of Mo-saiQ, joins Brandolon Barnett, Head of Innovation and Philanthropy at Giving Compass, to discuss advancing science, education, technology, and math (STEM) education by celebrating diverse voices and providing equitable opportunities.
Welcome to the first episode of The Guide to Good Series, where we explore transformative ideas shaping our world. Our guest, Nikole Collins-Puri, former CEO of Techbridge Girls and founding CEO of Mo-saiQ, joined Brandolon Barnett, Head of Innovation and Philanthropy at Giving Compass, to discuss reinventing STEM education by celebrating diverse voices and providing equitable opportunities. Over 24 years, Techbridge Girls has developed an equity framework to empower Black and Brown girls in STEM fields, challenging conventional norms and fostering a sense of belonging and agency.
Reimagining STEM Education:
During the conversation, Collins-Puri emphasizes the importance of reinventing STEM education to center the identities and experiences of Black and Brown girls. This involves celebrating the contributions of women and people of color in STEM fields, applying STEM education in relevant and hands-on ways, and empowering girls to use STEM for the greater good.
TechBridge's Equity Framework:
Collins-Puri also discusses Techbridge Girls' equity framework, which is based on three pillars: “being STEM,” using “STEM,” and “doing STEM.”
- Being STEM: Centering Identity in STEM
It’s pivotal to recognize and honor trailblazers like Gladys West, whose contributions to GPS technology. “Being STEM” is about showcasing the lineage of Black and Brown women who have shaped STEM fields for generations, providing a sense of identity and belonging to young girls. - Using STEM: Applying STEM in Everyday Life
Using hands-on experiences that resonate with girls’ everyday lives is one effective approach to STEM education. Collins-Puri emphasizes the need for girls to understand how STEM intersects with their lives, fostering a deeper connection and interest in the subject. - Doing STEM: Empowering Purpose-driven Learning
The girls in TechBridge want to lead purpose-driven lives that empower them to change their futures. “Doing STEM” shows the girls how different the disciplines drive positive change in the world.
The Role of Funding in Driving Impact
Collins-Puri highlights the transformative power of funding, especially general operating grants that support infrastructure and scaling, as well as connections to expertise in areas like technology, marketing, and legal services. Funding has already enabled the organization to reach more girls and educators, and Collins-Puri hopes more funders will recognize the impact they can have by investing in organizations like Techbridge Girls. With the support, Techbridge Girls can create even more opportunities for girls to thrive in STEM fields.
Collins-Puri’s insights remind us of the transformative potential of reimagining education through a lens of equity, representation, and empowerment. As we navigate the complex landscape of STEM education, her vision of blending tradition with innovation serves as a beacon of hope and possibility. Join us in embracing a future where every girl, regardless of background, can thrive and excel in STEM fields, contributing to a more inclusive and prosperous society.
