A New York Times article about the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation (EMCF) began this way: “A New York foundation that focuses largely on opportunities for low-income youths is creating a fund to help charities become bigger and more efficient.” That sentence essentially captures the innovative work of Nancy Roob, EMCF’s president and chairman.

As harsh as it may sound, “as many friends as you think you might have, you really don't have them,” says Nancy Roob of the relationship between funders and grantees. Yet she has developed a few, making her more effective at her job.
