Activating Philanthropy’s Power for Change: Tools to Advance Equity and Inclusion

Iowa Council of Foundations

About

Foundations are unique entities that hold enormous power and privilege. And because power is not often discussed openly and directly in the philanthropic sector, it tends to grow in unintentional ways that mirror and exacerbate existing power structures. Too often, foundation leaders act from power they are unaware that they wield. This embedded, seemingly invisible culture and privilege informs how a foundation decides what is “normal,” “good,” “effective” or “risky.”

The session will introduce Power Moves: Your Essential Philanthropy Assessment Guide for Equity and Justice, an innovative resource for funders from the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). Power Moves helps funders examine their power and fully activate it to create change – with humility and attention to privilege.

Join us for this interactive session on how Power Moves can help you redefine risk to more effectively build, share and wield power for equity and justice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how Power Moves is distinct among philanthropy tools, and ways to get started with the guide.
  • Understand how power and privilege operate within your institution.
  • Learn how to obtain honest feedback on grantmaking, partnerships and public leadership.
  • Obtain practical tips for advancing discussion and action around re-conceptualizing “risk” among distinct philanthropic roles and institutions.
  • Find out how other grantmakers are using Power Moves.
  • Hear practical insights from your foundation peers who have explored power and equity issues.

Who should attend?

  • Foundation executives who support organizational culture and operations
  • Grantmaking staff who support grant programs and programming
  • Program staff who lead diversity, equity and inclusion for their organization and/or community
  • Program staff who coordinate nonprofit networks, nonprofit learning, nonprofit trainings and support nonprofit peer-learning
  • Evaluation staff who track and monitor progress for the foundation and/or their community
  • Staff at new foundations that are establishing their grant programs and focus areas

Please join us – we think this session has something for everyone!
