Addressing the Nature Crisis: Science Based Targets, Partnerships, and Scaling Impact

Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors

About

A cartoon from Canadian Graeme MacKay circulating since March depicts the crisis of COVID-19 as a tsunami that is overshadowed by three other related and far larger crises: first recession, then climate change, and looming behind that the loss of biodiversity.
Please join us for a virtual convening on September 23rd, 11:00am EDT to discuss new guidance for companies on setting “science based targets for nature” as a way to address such crises and protect our shared global commons. This new guidance sets out measurable and actionable targets that companies can take to create a safe and just operating space for people and the planet.
This guidance is a product of the Science Based Targets Network, part of the Global Commons Alliance—a systems change initiative supported by a funder collaborative that seeks to empower citizens, cities, companies, and countries to become stewards of our global commons. This guidance is essential for companies to commit to and play their critical role in creating a zero-carbon, nature-positive economy.
Following remarks from those already involved with this effort, the session will allow other participants to share perspectives on the guidance itself, and how this work can enhance the work of other funders and scale impact through strategic partnerships in the months and years to come. This event, being held during the opening week of the 2020 United Nations General Assembly, is hosted by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and the Global Commons Alliance.

Agenda:

Welcoming Remarks
  • Dr. Kristian Parker, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, Oak Foundation
  • Thomas Anthony Brenninkmeijer, Investment Committee Member, Porticus
Highlights of Interim Guidance for Companies on Science Based Targets Framework
  • Cristianne Close, Global Practice Leader, Markets, WWF
  • Erin Billman, Executive Director, Science Based Targets Network
Interactive Discussion
  • Moderated by Heather Grady, Vice President, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors
About the Science Based Targets Network
The Science Based Targets Network works with other Global Commons Alliance partners to identify and motivate all actors, from companies to cities, investors and policy-makers toward the systemic transformation needed to achieve the future we need. For both climate and nature, science-based targets can drive multi-level and multi-actor ambition loops between policy and voluntary corporate action to help secure a nature-positive future for humanity.
About the Global Commons Alliance
The Global Commons Alliance is responding to scientists’ identification of thresholds for—and pathways to preserve—the stability and resilience of the global commons: our shared land, seas, atmosphere, and biodiversity that are critical to supporting life on Earth. This effort is aimed at regenerating our natural systems and decarbonizing our global economy.  Over the last few years, a group of funders have come together to support this Alliance and there are now over 30 organizations actively involved.
