Advocacy Immersion Journey to Washington, D.C.

Host Organization: The Philanthropy Workshop

About

Join us for our 2023 Advocacy Immersion Journey to Washington, DC, where we will explore systems change at the strategic intersection of democracy, climate, and racial justice. We will peek behind the scenes of policy making and enforcement to study the complex coalitions, grand bargains, and never ending compromise that underpin meaningful advocacy. Beginning our journey with a place-based case study, we will consider each of these themes through a historic lens to examine the root causes of present day fractures in multiracial coalitions.

We will apply these lessons to interrogate the role that funders can play in coalition building, grassroots mobilization, and multi-year policy campaigns. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of opposition tactics, long-term funding approaches, and the options and limits of tax-deductible nonprofit advocacy to hold government and private actors accountable. Participants will gain analytic insight into the critical interplay between issue advocacy, procedural opportunism, and the politics of crisis to strengthen their own funding and advocacy strategies.

This is an evergreen opportunity for members at every stage of their giving journey and level of advocacy experience to develop enduring bonds with fellow TPW members.
