Foundation Effectiveness: What It Takes

Host Organization: Philanthropy New York

About

Foundation effectiveness is deceptively difficult. Drawing on the latest Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) research, as well as CEP’s experience working with hundreds of foundation clients, Phil Buchanan will explain what it takes. He’ll speak to both inspiring examples and stunning foundation failures, offering lessons learned that are applicable to foundations large and small. He’ll take on some of the pervasive myths about effectiveness, including that “business thinking” is what philanthropy needs. He’ll also address critics of the “effectiveness movement” – some of whom have argued that effectiveness has been defined in a way that is at odds with racial equity – suggesting that, in fact, effectiveness and racial equity go hand in hand. He’ll draw on his deep experience in the sector, as well as draw lessons from key CEP reports, including the recently released Relationships Matter: Program Officers, Grantees, and the Keys to Success.
