Fund the People Funder Retreat

Host Organization: Northern California Grantmakers

About

In these challenging times, the performance and impact of foundations remains dependent on the dedicated nonprofit professionals and activists who deliver social service and fight for social justice every day. People on the frontlines deserve and need support to not just survive but to thrive, get results, and endure for the long haul. And yet funders undermine their own missions by not investing in their grantees’ people. The Fund the People 2017 Retreat brings together a community of funders who are actively learning how to maximize investments in their grantees’ workforce.

The Retreat is a high quality professional development experience that will engage foundation executives and trustees, alongside key nonprofit colleagues, to advance talent-investing in the field. This is a unique opportunity to advance your foundation’s goals by applying the ideas and practices of talent-investing. The retreat will focus on the value proposition and exemplary practices for investing in the nonprofit workforce - from the perspectives of funders, nonprofits, and intermediaries supporting the field. And you will leave with your own action plan!

At the time of the retreat, we will be exactly six months into the Trump era. We all know this is a political and social period with profound implications for the efficacy of the social sector. This Funder Retreat will offer an important opportunity to pause and reflect on the important matter of how funders can best support their grantees' leaders and staff during a period of proposed deep government funding cuts, increased community need and engagement, and intense strains on nonprofit professionals.

Special retreat highlights include:

  • Insights from the leading thinkers on driving effectiveness and equity, including NCRP, Northern California Grantmakers, Bay Area Justice Funders Network, and more.
  • Learn from key nonprofit executives, who are committed to staff development, about the benefits and challenges of funder support for their workforce.
  • Tap into wisdom from six new case studies produced by Putnam Consulting Group and commissioned by Fund the People.
  • Utilize the new Fund the People Toolkit to access cutting-edge content and how-to resources to craft plans for talent-investment at your foundation.
  • In-depth peer-exchange and learning with diverse foundation trustees, CEOs, and program staff from across issue-areas, geographic areas, and types of foundations.
  • Top notch professional facilitation from Jessica Bearman, Bearman Consulting, along with presentations and support from the Fund the People team
