re you aware of the significant changes made to the national child welfare system and the impact this will have on Alaska Native and Native American children and families?
As of October 1, 2019, a full scope of updates to the Family First Prevention Service Act went into effect. The implementation of this new policy created important opportunities and additional federal resources to improve child safety and reduce abuse and neglect, while strengthening the capacity of families to effectively meet the needs of their children.
Some examples of how the law has changed include:
- availability of funds to provide prevention services for children at-risk of entering foster;
- mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment services;
- new resources to family-connected caregivers including grandparents, and any other relatives helping to raise children
- in-home parent skill-based services; and,
- specialized services for youth at-risk of becoming victims of sex trafficking
