Madam C.J. Walker and Andrew Carnegie in Dialogue: The Past, Present & Future of Race, Gender and Philanthropy

Host Organization: Lilly Family School of Philanthropy

About

Tyrone Freeman’s Madam C.J. Walker’s Gospel of Giving (2020) establishes Walker as a foremother of African American philanthropy, while Maribel Morey’s White Philanthropy (2021) problematizes the legacy of Andrew Carnegie’s vision for national and international philanthropy.

In dialogue with each other’s work, Freeman and Morey will introduce their book-length research on these two early 20th century philanthropists and discuss how their historical works can contribute to today’s discussions on the role of philanthropy in achieving greater racial and gender equality.
