Notes from the Field: State & Local Movement Leaders Organizing in Response to Anti-LGBTQ Backlash

Host Organization: Funders for LGBTQ Issues

About

We cannot talk about the domestic backlash against transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) communities, and the LGBTQ community more broadly, without looking deeply into the far right’s state and local strategy. In the past several months, close to five hundred anti-LGBTQ bills have been filed in state legislatures nationwide, the vast majority of which are anti-TGNC. Many of these bills, targeting the South and Midwest, have been successfully challenged thanks to incredible organizing and resistance work by frontline LGBTQ movement groups. However, several significant bills have passed into law, devastating the rights of TGNC communities. This funder briefing will offer participants an opportunity to hear about the historical context of the far right’s strategy to weaponize TGNC communities in their work to attack bodily autonomy, hear about current work and wins across the field, and identify strategies for philanthropy to deepen their partnership with LGBTQ movements.

This funder briefing is co-sponsored by Grantmakers for Southern Progress (GSP).
