Nuance of Words: Re-Framing Language to Increase Advocacy

Host Organization: Exponent Philanthropy

About

Reproductive rights and justice are under attack, isolation is increasing the demand for relationship abuse services, and society is finally motivated to take action against racial in-justice and oppression. Funders are responding, but if we aren’t intentional about word choice and language, we can inadvertently undermine the causes we’re moving forward. For example, which phrasing allows us to focus on preventing gender-based violence: “how many girls were raped” or “how many men raped girls”? This session will challenge common terminology in the mainstream media and invite participants to practice reframing language to increase their advocacy and impact as change makers.
