Philanthropy's Role in Building an Inclusive Democracy: Conversation with Sayu Bhojwani

Host Organization: Seattle Foundation and Philanthropy Northwest

About

Here in the Northwest, we know that philanthropy is an integral part of supporting a thriving, representative and inclusive democracy. But investing in a healthy democracy can take a number of different formats! Join us for a conversation with Sayu Bhojwani and Kiran Ahuja to discuss tools, ideas and challenges facing funders as we work to build a more inclusive democracy, particularly getting people of color into elected office at the local, state and federal levels. We will think about democracy in rural places, how the 2020 Census will play a pivotal role in our country, and the ways that philanthropy can move beyond 'civic engagement' to actually strengthening democratic practices.

Sayu Bhojwani is the President of New American Leaders. She is also the author of People Like Us: The New Wave of Candidates Knocking at Democracy's Door. It shows that every day, ordinary people can overcome barriers to run for office and win. Bhojwani started New American Leaders in 2010 to prepare first and second generation Americans to use their power and potential in elected office and to help build a more inclusive democracy. The campaigns highlighted in the book offer insights into the challenges and opportunities in our democracy and offer hope in a time where immigrants, women, and people of color are under attack by the current administration.

The conversation will take place at the Seattle Foundation, but will have a video option available for folks outside of the Seattle Metropolitan region. This event is being supported by the Seattle Foundation and in partnership with the University of Washington.
