The Green New Deal aims to address economic inequality while building a new clean energy industry. Green jobs growth, as demonstrated by recent industry reports at the state and federal levels, can serve disadvantaged communities in New York and nationwide with well-paying, local jobs. Public, private, and philanthropic actors have an opportunity to equip workers for clean energy careers, especially in the energy efficiency sector where jobs in heating, cooling, lighting, insulation, and other efficiency technologies grew by over 6% in 2017 in New York State.
Without direct attention to workforce, firms will face growing challenges to hire installers, technicians, and other support services workers that account for nearly 80% of the clean energy value chain. New York State has launched its own Green New Deal: it is now funding nearly $70M in clean energy workforce initiatives. How can funders coordinate strategies for maximal impact?
