The Keys to Growing Your Nonprofit: Effective Finance & Operations Management

Host Organization: Stanford Social Innovation Review

About

To achieve financial and organizational sustainability, social-sector leaders must change the culture of scarcity that has plagued the sector for decades. The first step in doing so is for leaders to understand and take responsibility for their programmatic revenue, capacity, and long-term financial needs. This interactive and engaging SSIRLive!program will help nonprofit leaders understand the key pieces of financial data that are crucial to making informed, effective decisions.

Finance and accounting are not just about balance sheets and income statements; they are also about effective decision-making. To find the data that matter for your financial sustainability, you have to know where to look in your financials and accounts, and understand what those numbers mean. Featuring real-world examples, the first part of this three-part series will increase the comfort-level of nonprofit leaders in reading and interpreting nonprofit financial statements and will enhance their understanding of:

  • Key financial indicators
  • How to engage in discussions about financial management challenges
  • Ways to improve long-term financial sustainability and impact
  • The common financial “worst practices” that limit scale and undermine impact

This program will provide social-sector leaders with a better understanding of the financial resources needed to deliver superior outcomes, how to think about “full cost,” and how to engage funders in conversation about financial challenges.  We invite board members, nonprofit executive directors, and finance and accounts staff to participate in this engaging learning opportunity. David Greco, the nonprofit finance expert, trainer, public speaker, and author will lead this session, and will be joined by former executive director of Craigslist Foundation, social entrepreneur, and best-selling author, Darian Rodriguez Heyman.
