The Make or Break Moment: Blending Capacity Building and Capital for Change

Host Organization: Philanthropy New York and New York Grantmakers in the Arts

About

In Nonprofit Finance Fund’s 2018 State of the Sector Survey, 86% of respondents expected demand for their services to increase in the coming year, but only 43% anticipated meeting it, and only 33% said they include capital for innovation and change in their budgets. Nonprofit organizations, like their for-profit counterparts, require regular investment in research and development, in their buildings, and in their staff, along with strategic and financial “know-how,” to navigate change and adapt to consistently meet community needs. In an evolving nonprofit sector, corporation and foundation funders are responding by blending different types of support in new and innovative ways.

Join Prudential Financial, New York Community Trust, Nonprofit Finance Fund, and two of their grantee partners for a panel discussion on learnings from recent work pairing capital and financial capacity-building.  Hear from funders about their investment strategies and nonprofit leaders about the impact of these approaches on their organizations.

This event is intended to spark dialogue about how capital and capacity-building can together support systemic change, strengthen targeted geographies, and improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in a portfolio, sector, or place. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion about their own investment approaches.

  • Investment strategies that combine capital and capacity-building to support adaptable, resilient nonprofits
