About

In the fall of 2017, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Florida Keys were devastated by an unprecedented series of natural disasters. In the immediate aftermath, St. Croix Foundation for Community Development launched the CARE Fund to provide direct support to front-line relief efforts and holistic long-term recovery strategies. Since then, through CARE we have raised and awarded over $1.8 million to support strategic, high impact investments in the Virgin Islands for hurricane preparedness, resilience, and recovery.

Founded in the midst of crisis 30 years ago, so much of how the Foundation serves today has been defined by the lessons we learned at our inception. The 2017 hurricanes validated our philanthropic approach relative to how to respond (vs react) to a community in need as each overarching priority established in the CARE Fund continues to have relevance as we contend with the unprecedented impacts of Covid-19 pandemic.

Today, the CARE Fund is a permanent Fund of St. Croix Foundation, providing support for a targeted response to COVID-19 and any other disaster we may face. The Fund will continue to serve and support the Virgin Islands community through future disasters and crises.

About the Host

St. Croix Foundation is in no way a traditional community foundation. While our portfolio does include strategic grant making, the core of our programmatic format is as an operating foundation.
