Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees: Haiti Earthquake Relief
About
Peasant villages in the Southwestern peninsula of Haiti are devastated after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit early on the morning of Saturday, August 14, 2021. The plain of Bakonwa (Baconois in the Nippes region of Haiti) suffered structural damage to houses, roads, and irrigation systems that were being developed. These irrigation systems are a crucial attempt to instill sustainable farming in the face of climate change and are integral to the livelihood of the community.
These efforts often go underserved by large-scale agencies. Please join us in a grassroots effort to provide support to this community.
About the Host
HWHR focuses on creating a nurturing and trusting environment, whether it is in our physical center or through remote online platforms. We are staffed by members, who share the struggles of each of these impacted groups. With their leadership, we continue to engage our members in decision-making and organizing efforts through the spaces that we have developed (TPS Committee, SIJS Committee, and a Domestic Violence Peer Support Group). We are also working closely with our partner legal organizations including TakeRoot Justice, Brooklyn Defenders and The Door, to assure that ongoing legal services are available to our undocumented populations, with adequate language support.
