Veterans Yoga Project envisions a future where all those affected by trauma have access to a full range of mind-body practices to facilitate recovery and resilience. VYP is on a mission to support recovery and resilience among our veterans, active-duty military members, their families, and communities. VYP is committed to providing recovery and resiliency tools and training in Safe, Predictable, and Controlled environments (SPaCe). VYP is an IAYT member school, and a certified Yoga Alliance school (RYS-200; YACEP). Working in partnership with veterans, active-duty military personnel, student veterans’ organizations, and other organizations, VYP-trained instructors teach over 100 yoga classes each week at no cost to veterans and their families. VYP providers support to all veterans, whether they are currently struggling with severe symptoms or they are focused on increasing resilience and giving back to others.
VYP began when Dr. Daniel J. Libby was working as a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Yale University Department of Psychiatry at the West Haven VA Medical Center, Connecticut. While providing psychotherapy for veterans recovering from PTS(D), he found that those who developed empowering self-regulating practices had better outcomes; they moved through post-traumatic stress to post-traumatic growth more quickly and gracefully.
