Rethinking Schools

Mission

Rethinking Schools is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization dedicated to sustaining and strengthening public education through social justice teaching and education activism. Our magazine, books, and other resources promote equity and racial justice in the classroom. We encourage grassroots efforts in our schools and communities to enhance the learning and well-being of our children and to build a broad democratic movement for social and environmental justice.

Since our founding in 1986, we have articulated a vision of education that equips students to imagine — and to help create —the transition to a more just society. Schools play a key role in nurturing the skills and sensibilities to contribute to a fundamentally better society — one built on principles of equality and ecology. We help teachers and activists tell stories about their exemplary work and strategies of resistance. Our work is situated in power-building through narrative change by centering the stories and expertise of teachers and activists. Purchasers of Rethinking Schools publications agree that the main reason for the organization is “to be the voice of the education justice movement.” Readers also value Rethinking Schools for connecting them to “a community of progressive educators."
