Lever for Change Lone Star Prize Finalist
Nearly 140,000 Texans lack access to clean water services with millions more facing water quality challenges. The problem is pervasive across geographies, income levels and race, but communities of color are disproportionately affected. And the growing population and price of water will exacerbate the situation. In response, Texas Water Trade proposes to launch a subsidiary that will install and maintain affordable onsite water treatment systems at a monthly fee below what the lowest income Texans pay today to supplement unsafe drinking water with bottled water—making reliable, clean water available to all Texans. Our business model allows for building community trust by training a local workforce for cost- effective, reliable delivery. After the 5-year ramp-up period, future customer subscription payments and capital raised will allow us to self-sufficiently deploy our solution to whoever needs it.
Launched in March 2020, the Lone Star Prize was a $10 million competition sponsored by Lyda Hill Philanthropies that sought to fund a transformative, proven solution to improve the quality of life for Texans in the areas of health, workforce, and the environment. 172 proposals were submitted to the competition and were evaluated using four criteria: whether the proposals were transformative, scalable, feasible, and evidence-based. Five Finalists were announced in January 2021. In June 2021, Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute was announced as the Lone Star Prize $10 million Awardee.
