Empower Maya Youth in a Post-Genocide Community

Host Organization: Limitless Horizons IXILmdi-circle-small San Gaspar Chajul, El Quiche, Guatemala mdi-circle-small http://www.limitlesshorizonsixil.org

About

Help us rebuild the post-conflict Maya Ixil community of Chajul, Guatemala that was devastated by the country's 36-year Civil War. Your gift provides educational opportunities to middle and high schoolers, two thirds of whom are girls. They attend Colegio Horizontes, or receive scholarships to other schools in Guatemala. All students get supplies, life-skills workshops, career counselling, and mentorship, empowering them to overcome hardship and forge bright futures!

Need

The village of Chajul is tucked away in the highlands of Guatemala. The parents of today's youth survived violence that amounted to genocide during the war. Today, the community remains impoverished and deeply scarred. Due to lack of resources, only 5% of Chajul's youth graduate from high school, with girls even less likely to complete their studies. Parents, only 24% of whom completed elementary school, dream that their children will have the educational opportunities which they did not.

Long term impact

Our scholars graduate with the academic, professional, and leadership skills needed to help their community recover from genocide and increase future educational opportunities. They are the future leaders and change makers of Chajul - teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, political leaders, farmers, mothers, and fathers. Their children will grow up with parents who place a high value on education and who can support them financially and emotionally.

About the Organization

Limitless Horizons Ixil's mission is to create opportunities for the indigenous youth, women, and families of Chajul, Guatemala, to develop the academic and professional skills needed to effect change in their lives and community.
