Send a Child in India to School for a Year

Host Organization: Seva Mandirmdi-circle-small Udaipur, Rajasthan, India mdi-circle-small http://www.sevamandir.org

About

Seva Mandir's focus is to provide access to quality education to the children in disadvantaged tribal areas through highly effective education interventions. Children are enabled to continue their education, having become confident, independent learners. Seva Mandir's approach includes mainstreaming children through bridge schools and strengthening government schools therefore, increasing their chances of retention.

Need

Access to education in these areas is limited (a) because it is often locally unavailable, (b) because of domestic and economic pressures forcing children to work, (c) because Government schools are far and lacks proper facilities, and (d) because it has traditionally not been accorded value. Nearly half of rural children in our area are out of school, and literacy levels are around just 33%.

Long term impact

Improving chances of a bright future for tribal children by providing them an opportunity to continue their education; enabling marginalized tribal communities to experience alternative and meaningful education; empowering communities to demand quality education from the government.

About the Organization

Seva Mandir's mission is to make real the idea of society consisting of free and equal citizens who are able to come together and solve the problems that affect them in their particular contexts. The commitment is to work for a paradigm of development and governance that is democratic and polyarchic. Seva Mandir seeks to institutionalise the idea that development and governance is not only to be left to the State and its formal bodies like the legislature and the bureaucracy, but that citizens and their associations should engage separately and jointly with the State. The mission briefly, is to construct the conditions in which citizens of plural backgrounds and perspectives can come together and deliberate on how they can work to benefit and empower the least advantaged in society.
