Help UPO Help the DC Homeless

Host Organization: United Planning Organizationmdi-circle-small Washington, DC, United States mdi-circle-small http://www.upo.org

About

We are the eyes and ears of the city. Every day, UPO's Shelter Hotline team protects the health of people who live on the streets. We also encourage them to get the assistance they need; then our Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) team is their champion to find a home and gives them intensive case management so they finally gain stability and achieve the highest possible quality of life.

Need

There are 4,900+ people experiencing homelessness in Washington DC. They are vulnerable to the elements, from icy conditions to searing heat in the summer, and many of them have unaddressed health conditions. They have both short-term and long-term needs: Their health has to be monitored regularly and we help to open their eyes to resources that can improve their lives and lead to having a stable home.

Long term impact

UPO's mission is Uniting People with Opportunities. Our holistic approach goes much further: - Helping people who emerge from homelessness to find homes and become self-sufficient. - Giving their children free education and family support. - Training them for their next job. - Partnering with developers to deliver new affordable housing that DC desperately needs. We give people the tools to become the change agents of their lives, to move from homelessness to "Home Sweet Home."

About the Organization

OUR MISSION: Uniting People with Opportunities. The United Planning Organization, the designated community action agency for Washington, DC, was established December 10, 1962 to plan, coordinate, and implement human services programs for low-income residents in the Nation's Capital. For over 50 years, UPO has been in the forefront of the war on poverty. As the catalyst for economic security and growth for all Washington, DC residents, UPO has laid the groundwork for innovative social service programs such as weatherization and energy conservation services, Head Start, workforce development training and youth development. Today, UPO continues to provide residents with comprehensive resources for early childhood education; youth development; employment and training; family and community services; case management and referrals to other supportive services.
