Anti-bias body image curriculum for high schools

Host Organization: Be Real USA NFPmdi-circle-small Glencoe, IL, United States mdi-circle-small http://www.berealusa.org

About

Help create a high school image education curriculum viewed through an anti-bias lens. Understanding Others will be the first curriculum of its kind, adding appearance prejudice to the body image discussion. Specifically focused on race, gender, body size and ability, we discuss how appearance is not just about beauty norms, it is about appearance-based prejudice and how that affects a person's self-worth, equal rights, and opportunities. Valuing diverse bodies leads to valuing diverse people.

Need

70% of adolescent girls and 45% of adolescent boys have body dissatisfaction, leading to a host of mental health problems. Problems stem from trying to fit into a narrow idea of beauty. This ideal has created outsiders, people whose race, ethnicity, body size, gender, and ability automatically exclude them society's appearance ideals. Our curriculum helps students understand the appearance bias from where these ideals originated. It offers coping tools for when they compare themselves to others.

Long term impact

We teach the kids to look behind social norms. We teach children how to notice their thoughts and help them adjust to their thought habits to serve them better. We help empower them to have a voice to change their environment.

About the Organization

We're spreading body confidence across the USA, so every child can grow up with a healthy relationship to food and their body. BE REAL USA is a grassroots movement linking caring people in their local community, business, and government with education and legislative advocacy opportunities. Research shows that children who grow up body confident have better physical and mental health, do better in and out of school, and are more likely to fulfill their unique potential. Together we can change a culture that isn't working for ANY BODY.
