Permanent LGBTQ+ Center in Western Japan!

Host Organization: NIJIIRO DIVERSITY KITA-KU, OSAKA, Japan https://nijiirodiversity.jp/

About

We are NIJIIRO DIVERSITY, a nonprofit organization working with the LGBTQ+ community, their families and allies. In 2022, we opened the Pride Center Osaka. It will be the first permanent LGBTQ+ center in Western Japan. The center offers: In-person community support services; Online community support services; LGBTQ+ information space; and Diverse events to connect LGBTQ+ people, their families and allies.

Need

Our recent research gained answers from 2231 people. Our research show that due to COVID-19, LGBTQ people are in higher risk of poverty. The results show LGBTQ people are facing higher risk of harassment at work, bullying, poverty, and mental illness while many are unable to ask for help in fear of discrimination. However, LGBTQ+ people in Japan also have high risk of being isolated due to the lack of permanent space where they can talk about their obstacles.

Long term impact

We aim to eliminate discrimination towards the LGBTQ community. Our work emphasizes that the obstacles facing the community are also connected to the obstacles faced by many other minority groups. We believe that making a society that is LGBTQ inclusive will also bring positive changes to other societal issues such as (but not limited to), women's empowerment, poverty, mental health, and discrimination based on race and nationality. #lgbt #lgbtq #lgbtqia #equality #humanrights #gender
