Project

Improve School Readiness for Vulnerable Children

Host Organization: Katalemwa Cheshire Home for Rehabilitation Services Kampala, Uganda https://www.katalemwacheshirehome.org/

About

This project will work with caregivers of Children with disabilities and other community members to establish Inclusive Home-based Early Childhood Learning centers in Kamuli District Uganda to prepare children with disabilities and other vulnerable children for early enrolment in mainstream schools. The project will counteract some of the barriers to early school enrolment of these children including the high cost of early childhood education, long distance, knowledge gap on inclusive education.

Need

Children with disabilities (CWDs) in Kamuli District miss out on early Childhood Education (ECE) yet ECE has been proven important to their development. This is due to such challenges as the early years being spent on rehabilitation, the high cost of accessing ECE for an average household of children with disabilities etc. These children then enroll for Primary Education when they are much older yet not ready leading to poor learning outcomes and consequentially to a vicious cycles of ignorance.

Long term impact

The project will improve school enrolment, retention, and completion for 225 Vulnerable children including children with disabilities in Kamuli District in the first year. In the long run, this education project will provide children with disabilities with an opportunity to contribute productively to the development of their communities and reduce the dependence syndrome. The financial status of caregivers of Children with disabilities will be improved since more time will be spent on work.
