De-Escalation: Grace under Fire

Host Organization: 501 Commons

About

Aggression and violence touch all areas of society, and we can no longer have any illusions that nonprofits, businesses, or schools are a sanctuary.

Nonprofit staff that work closely with clients who are emotionally unstable are especially vulnerable. These problems are compounded by substance abuse or mental illness. On occasion, the aggressive individuals they encounter can be co-workers.

With recent news of shootings and workplace violence rocking the country, we’re now having important conversations about how we can prevent more tragedies from taking place in our neighborhoods. The ability to understand and recognize dangerous behavior and the willingness to learn de-escalation techniques is a great place to start.
