Giving Compass' Take:

• This post from Northern California Grantmakers provides information and a link to a United Way fund that will give direct, immediate support for those who have lost their homes in the recent wildfires raging across the state.

• The fund will also assist a more sustained recovery effort over weeks and months, an important factor to consider when donating in the wake of a disaster.

NCG is tracking fires across Northern California and connecting with trusted local funders on what’s needed. We are also in touch with Philanthropy California partners Southern California Grantmakers and San Diego Grantmakers to coordinate philanthropic responses to fires across the state. We will keep this site updated with information on how to help.

The Camp Fire has already burnt much of the town of Paradise, north of Sacramento, just outside of Chico. The fire has taken five lives and over a thousand homes. Evacuation orders have sent tens of thousands of people in the region from their homes.

NCG has been in touch with funders across the region to identify partners to reliably support response and recovery from this disaster.

How to Help

United Way of Northern California has set up a fund to provide immediate cash grants to those who lost their homes, provide gift cards, gas cards, and other essentials to people who have been evacuated, and support recovery in the weeks and months to come. United Way is working with the Red Cross and other trusted local partners on the ground to distribute aid.
