The federal government has encouraged parental involvement in education for three decades now, since 1988’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act. But much of the federal money supporting parental engagement ran out in 2011. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is looking to revitalize parents' relationships with their children's schools in three critical ways.

  1. Emphasis on a parent-school compact.
  2. $10 Million dollars allocated for 20 states to create family engagement centers.
  3.  More Money to districts for family engagement activities that support learning
