We started The Universal Design Project as a nonprofit to address a widespread problem: the way that our homes and communities are designed isn’t very functional for people who deal with a disability on a daily basis.
You may be thinking, “Is this really an issue? There’s handicap-accessible stuff everywhere!” Here’s the problem: all of that stuff is in public spaces, noticeable in parking lots and bathrooms have the International Symbol of Access attached to them because of laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act.
It’s actually rare to find private homes designed in such a way that they’re functional for anyone, especially those affected by disability.
We believe that the most effective way to address this problem is to demonstrate what’s possible with universal design. In order to do this, we feel strongly about doing our own design work in-house (instead of teaching others how to do it and hoping for the best), but in a way that involves people who understand the myriad of nuances related to the myriad of health issues commonly associated with disability.
