It’s nearly impossible to address all the vast disparities based on race, income, gender and more that take place throughout the world. In theory, we created the charity and nonprofit sector to resolve these problems, but the fact of the matter is that it’s just not that simple. That being said, we can make this ‘foolproof’ solution more competent.

Philanthropic efforts require a level of accountability to be successful. Part of that is facing down hard truths, or in this case that the nonprofit model asks for support from the wealth that created the divide in the first place.

Back in 2009, Pablo Eisenberg described the philanthropy problem by saying, “Much of current philanthropic giving, by foundations and individuals, neither meets the needs of our charitable organizations nor addresses some of our most urgent public needs.”

While it’s understandable that they want to stand out from the crowd in order to develop support and make an impact, we also need to acknowledge that just because one person or group addresses the issue, it doesn’t mean they can tackle it in full.
