Chakshu Chhabra, an IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy student pursuing her master’s in philanthropic studies, is driven to understand philanthropy on a global scale. While working in the social impact sector in India, she knew the practical skills of philanthropy, but not the full picture. She had certain questions that came to mind about philanthropy, specifically moral and ethical questions.

In an attempt to explore these questions further, she decided to pursue a graduate degree. While researching programs, she discovered the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. “I thought, ‘Wow, there is a school which teaches philanthropy. How interesting is that.’” she said. “I had no idea it existed or that it was a concept.”

After a few conversations with faculty and staff she says she knew she found the right fit. She especially valued the program’s small cohort size, which allowed for direct interaction with professors and meaningful conversations with classmates from around the world.

“It was important to study philanthropy in an institution which could help unpack philanthropy through a historical and global lens,” Chhabra said. “If I had gone somewhere else, I don’t think my experience would have been as enriching. The program challenged my beliefs and informed my understanding of why philanthropy exists. If someone wants to deep-dive into philanthropy from both an academic and an ethical standpoint, this is the place.”

To broaden her perspective even further, Chhabra is spending her final semester in an exchange program at the University of Hamburg in Germany. When she isn’t in class or studying, she seeks out ways to experience German culture. One such experience was the Hamburg Foundation Days. It’s a multi-day civic event that brings about 150 charitable organizations together for workshops, concerts, and other activities. The event kicks off with a 400-meter communal gathering called “Hamburg’s Longest Table of Democracy”. Chhabra says it was fascinating to see all of these organizations come together and people engaging with them.
