Earlier this season, LeBron James wore shoes that said “EQUALITY” on them as a silent protest. NFL players have been kneeling for the national anthem. While much has been written about the various important issues these professional athletes have called attention to, specifically the unequal treatment minorities have experienced from law enforcement, CNN contributor and former NFL receiver Donté Stallworth said that the athlete protests are also about the “gender pay gap.”
If that's the case, here are some numbers to consider:
The average WNBA player makes $72,000 while the average NBA player will make $6.6 million this season. That’s a gender pay gap in professional basketball of 98.9% and means that the average female WNBA player earns a little more than a penny (1.1 cents) for every dollar a male player in the NBA earns.
If LeBron James and the NFL players are concerned about “equality” and the “gender pay gap,” couldn’t they address the significant gender pay inequality in professional basketball by donating part of their salaries to the WNBA?
