Nearly 70 people have been confirmed dead due to flooding in the Texas Hill Country, where rescue and recovery efforts continued Sunday.
Some of those reported dead or missing are from the Houston area, including Jeff Wilson, a longtime teacher in Humble ISD who died during the floods, according to the school district. Greta Toranzo, a 10-year-old Houston ISD student, is among those missing from Camp Mystic, a beloved all-girls camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River.
Houston-area residents and those across the state can help the flood victims and their families.
Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring said Sunday there are several ways to directly support Kerr County, where there have been at least 59 deaths, including 38 adults and 21 children.
"Our goal is to rescue those in peril and find those who are lost," Herring said. "I understand our community, our state, and the world have been responding. Thank you."
In a social media post early Sunday, the Kerrville Police Department said the city did not need additional food or water donations, but said monetary donations were still being accepted.
Here are ways to help Kerr County and Kerrville:
- Monetary donations to support the families can be made via the nonprofit Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country.
- The Kerrville branch of the Salvation Army has been designated as the official volunteer coordinator and in-kind donations partner. It will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday and can be reached at 830-465-4797.
- Volunteers can also register at tcr.communityos.org.
Ways Houston-area residents can assist
Along with making donations directly to the organizations listed above, several Houston-area groups are also organizing fundraisers and donation drives of their own.
The Cy-Fair FFA will be collecting gift cards for the Ingram/Kerrville community.
Gift cards can be dropped off from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 10 at 11206 Telge Rd. in Cypress.
Types of gift cards requested:
- HEB/Walmart
- Lowes/Home Depot
- Visa/Mastercard
Humble ISD will be running a similar gift card donation drive from Sunday to Tuesday, with two different pickup locations from noon-7 p.m. daily.
The two pickup locations are
- North AG Barn: 4020 Mills Branch Dr. in Kingwood
- George Turner Stadium guest parking lot: 1700 Wilson Rd. in Humble
Humble ISD will also be accepting a variety of other donations, but said gift cards were the best way to help.
