Giving Compass' Take:
• Amanda LaFleur shows us that people can benefit from having strong networks of support when coping with Postpartum Depression or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.
• Whether you're involved in women's issues or another cause, how do you give back? Is building a network part of your giving strategy?
• Individual and personal networks are beneficial, as well as local community organizations, but there are also national networks of linked organizations that are able to provide large-scale support for people in need.
As a survivor of Postpartum Depression (PPD) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) I wanted to provide a source of recognition, support, and information for others also battling reproductive mood disorders.
In 2015, we were put in touch with the family of Gia Allemand who had lost her life to PMDD and suicide. By 2017, NAPMDD had merged with Gia Allemand Foundation Inc to form Gia Allemand Foundation as it is today; a global nonprofit organization providing free and confidential peer support services in addition to a developing TeleCare and education program.
We are now a team of powerful women (and men too!) advocating for the accurate treatment and diagnosis of reproductive mood disorders as well as a bridge to life-saving resources.
What does giving mean to you? Why do you continue to give your time, talents, money, or more to your community?
So many times I felt like giving up. When I was still battling symptoms or we didn't have enough funds, it felt like giving up was the best option. I now know that sticking it through, even when things looked bleak, is the catalyst to real change.
What would you tell others who are looking to start giving back? Share a piece of advice will help them get started.
Anyone can give back! Whether you decide to start a nonprofit or social change enterprise or decide to start a fundraising campaign, you can be a pioneer for positive change! I love the quote "when you feel like giving up, remember why you started" because when you're fighting an uphill battle, it can take everything in you to stay with it and keep fighting.
