Giving Compass' Take:

• This video from The Atlantic Festival features three leaders (two from the philanthropy sector and one from the corporate world) having an open and honest discussion on racism: How can we fight back without causing more harm?

• To address the problems in our country, we can't be afraid of difficult conversations. This panel may provide inspiration on how you can take the ideals of tolerance and racial harmony in your own life and work.

• Here's more about the competitive advantage of racial equity in corporate America.

At The Atlantic festival on October 3, Michele Norris of The Race Card Project led a discussion with Jeff Raikes of the Raikes Foundation, Darren Walker, President of Ford Foundation, and Kevin Johnson, President and CEO of Starbucks, to tackle the difficult issues of racial equity in America. How can the private and public sector work together to heal our deepest divides? What role does philanthropy play in fighting discrimination? Where does Corporate Social Responsibility come in?

Some highlights:

"Having a social impact agenda can and is complementary to the pursuit of profit," said Johnson. "For us, we're trying to redefine the role and responsibility of a publicly-traded company."

"We're not going to solve the issues in our country if we just leave it to leaders of color to speak out on this," said Raikes, referring to countering divisive narratives. "If we are going to address these issues in ways that tap into the potential of all people, we are going to have to have leaders that look like me who are willing to speak."

"In a time of growing inequality, where for the first time we see downwardly mobile white people in this country, it is very hard to have these conversations," said Walker, who added that we must still try to build bridges to better understanding. "Most Americans aren't like [the guys who marched in Charlottesville]. Most Americans do want to see this country progress and believe in the ideals of opportunities for all."
