Romero’s personal brand of philanthropy is a mix of art and activism: Through a music and documentary-focused effort called The ISHues Project, he hopes to inspire others to make a difference, however small and for however long it takes to have an impact.

ISHues is not a nonprofit, Romero explains, but more of a collection of artists, musicians and filmmakers headquartered in leased space at a century-old ice house in Old Towne Orange.

His current focus is on a feature-length documentary about a young, homeless African-American singer named Ish Herring whom he met on the streets of Los Angeles while doing music projects with youth in foster care. Romero, who has played guitar since his early teens and is a songwriter, has partnered with two friends from Los Angeles — commercial photographer Scott Montgomery and filmmaker Kevin Neynaber — to produce the 90-minute film under the auspices of Live Ice House Productions.
