If you were to guess the average amount of time a kid spends in unstructured play outdoors, what would your answer be?

An hour? Recess often doesn’t last for that long...Maybe 30 minutes? 25? 20?

Seven.

That is how many minutes, on average, a child in the U.S. spends outside, just being a kid.

At NatureBridge, it’s our goal to change that by providing opportunities for our youth to get away from the concrete jungles they’ve always known and into the natural world they have yet to discover.

This year, REI is continuing its #OptOutside campaign by closing its doors on Black Friday to encourage people across the country to ditch the crowded malls and get outside.

But #OptOutside goes beyond creating an alternative tradition that revolves around family instead of profit.

According to a report released by REI, 95 percent of our lives are spent indoors. More and more, humans and moving towards what is being called an “indoor species.”
