D.C.-area venture capitalist and real estate veteran Todd Hitt could see the devastation from the sky.

But when he landed in Puerto Rico on a private jet, he could feel the impact of Hurricane Maria, he said, likening it to the difference between watching a football game on television and being inside the stadium — experiencing what’s really going on.

The Kiddar Capital founder and CEO, also a member of the family behind Hitt Contracting, traveled to the island with its former governor, Luis Fortuño, now a partner in Steptoe & Johnson LLC’s Washington office, among others. They brought supplies, met with government officials and set out to determine where the business community can help.

They’re going to need both the mainland investment and mainland real estate and construction expertise to get it back, and I would say it’s multiple years before you get it rebuilt in the way that they really want to do it,” he said.
