Appalled by the amount of bread thrown away by bakeries, Singapore-based Austrian couple Henry and Christine Laimer founded Food from the Heart in 2003, a charity set out to combat food waste through redistributing leftover bread to those in need.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) of Singapore published a guide to reducing household food waste and here are some of their key tips:
- Shop smartly and commit to making a “use-it-up” meal once a week.
- Plan your meals better: check out these recipes to use up ingredients that are about to expire.
- Store your food correctly: follow this helpful food storage chart, freeze your food to prolong its shelf life and set your fridge (0-4 °C) and freezer (below -18 °C) to the correct temperature.
- Donate your leftover, non-perishable food and/or volunteer with Food from the Heart or other food redistribution organizations to help deliver surplus produce to those in need.
