Giving Compass' Take:

• The author suggests that 'new philanthropy' is asking more from us than what we are providing now. They are calling out philanthropists that lack commitment to causes and sustainable giving practices.

• How can philanthropists pursue and promote long-term strategic impact giving that will contribute to sustainability?

• Read about how foundations are modifying their own structures to achieve greater impact philanthropy.

We all know that those children need more than just food and clothes to survive in the outside world. They need to develop skills, they need to build competencies in certain areas of life. In the world where we are developing rapidly in technology, it will not be out of place for those children to at least learn certain basic skills in computing.

We get compassionate but the problem is lack of commitment. We get compassionate for a few minutes, we say things like, “People are suffering and our leaders are engaging in corruption” “People are dying and all our leaders talk about is how to buy new cars” and so on.

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn” — Alvin Toffler

I would like to call this a wake-up call. A wake-up call to all new generation philanthropists. Those who really want to help but don’t know how. Those who are limited by what we define philanthropy as in the present day. Those who are limited by what we define philanthropy as in the present day. So, the only way we can establish a sustained level of empowerment is by “teaching them how to catch fish” not “giving them fish” as the old adage goes.

We, at Gracit foundation, are committed to empowering the less privileged through technology. We set up computer laboratories at orphanages so as to empower children with basic computing skills such as typing, using the mouse and so on and then we build on those basic skills with more advanced skills like web development, graphic design.
