Typhoon Molave slammed into central Vietnam as one of the biggest storms to hit the country in two decades. The deadly storm struck the region on the heels of week-long catastrophic floods.
Those families and communities in the path of flooding have been impacted by damage and destruction. Homes have been lost along with food supplies. With no access to clean water, grave concerns for the health of those already vulnerable to the COVID pandemic's deadly impact grow.
Before it hit Vietnam, Typhoon Molave passed through the Philippines, where it caused deadly flooding as well as landslides.
Save the Children has been serving the needs of children and families in Vietnam since 1990. Here's what you need to know about the flooding, its impact on children and families and how to help.
How many children have been impacted by Typhoon Molave?
The storm has put an estimated 2.5 million children at risk. In addition, an estimated 7.7 million people in central Vietnam have been impacted by flooding since earlier this month.
What is the difference between a hurricane, typhoon and cyclone?
A storm becomes a hurricane, typhoon or cyclone once it reaches wind speeds of 74 mph.
What we call a storm depends on where it occurs. Hurricanes occur in the Atlantic and Caribbean, typhoons in the Asia-Northwest Pacific region and cyclones are specific to the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.
