For a major city, Los Angeles offers a wide array of opportunities to bond with nature. And this being L.A. many of these chances come with a unique twist. One of the most special and magical is at Wolf Connection (https://wolfconnection.org/), a wolf/dog sanctuary in Acton, about an hour north of Los Angeles.
Founded by Teo Alfero in 2009, the sanctuary, which currently has 25 wolves on the 165 acre property, allows visitors to hike with the rescue wolves once a month. It’s an incredible experience, one that is almost mystical for animal lovers as visitors do the nature walk, stopping every 15 minutes or so for an opportunity to meet one of the eight wolves that joined us on our hike.
Michelle Cano, a Los Angeles animal enthusiast who has worked with dogs and traveled extensively to spend time with animals like elephants in Thailand, was very moved by the experience. “What made it special was how unique it was to be able to hike with wolves. That’s something people only dream about. It’s amazing to see these animals who are abandoned then rescued, get a second chance at life while helping others,” she says.
