Giving Compass' Take:

• The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will track data on the efforts to eradicate poverty and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The foundation will publish a report every year until 2030 and utilize storytelling to accompany data.

• How will highlighting stories behind the data help advance progress with the SDGs?

• Read more about why we need to step up action on the sustainable development goals.

Between 1990 and today, the number of people living in poverty has been cut in half. Six million fewer children die every year.

It's hard sometimes for people to see the progress because they see how different and tough the conditions are in poor countries. What gets lost is the quiet progress unfolding around us. That's why this year we're bringing leaders together in New York to ask them and you to zoom in on the stories behind the data, stories of leadership, stories of the people who are saving and improving lives.  We can choose to continue on the path of progress to improve the lives of the poorest of the poor. or we can fall off that path.

Every year at the Gates Foundation we will track data behind the sustainable development goals, and share what we think is working be honest when we think it's not.

To meet the Global Goals, it will take commitment and perseverance, continued investments and innovation; but most importantly it will take leadership at every level.
