As we look ahead to 2023, there is certainly no shortage of big problems for donors to help tackle – reproductive rights access, humanitarian crises, plummeting math and reading test scores in U.S. schools, and climate change, to name a few.

And while the 2022 midterm elections are behind us, the work to strengthen democracy and create a more just society continues every day by nonprofits across the country.

To help address these complex issues, change inequitable systems, and fill the funding gaps that exist across issue areas, donors should consider taking an intersectional approach to their philanthropy.

This #GivingTuesday, we’re sharing these ideas for how to give with impact. But if you believe in building stronger communities that work for all people, it’s critical to create a long-term giving plan.

Plan Your Giving for 2023 and Beyond

Just over half of donors say they know how much they will give to nonprofits each year, with 30% of donors earmarking funds for unplanned events or requests from friends and family.

Giving PlannerCreating a giving roadmap offers benefits no matter where you are in your philanthropic journey. Developing a plan allows you to set your intentions early in the year (or before a new year starts) so it’s easier to stay the course and reach your philanthropic goals. By creating a strategy in November, December, or January, you have more time to tap your network and create a bigger impact with more dollars for the new year.

If you’re unsure about where to start, evaluate your current giving strategy and donation amounts with the Giving Calculator. After entering a few pieces of information, the calculator will display how your giving compares to other donors like you and set you on the path to create a giving plan.

Across the country, grassroots organizations are focused on power building in communities of color, narrative change, organizing, and other civic engagement work. Despite the effectiveness of these efforts, only 2% of philanthropic funding is directed to these nonprofits. And, movement building work takes more than a 2- to 4-year election cycle. Multi-year, unrestricted funding from committed donors is necessary to move the needle.
