All Immigration is Local': Philanthropy’s Role in State and Local Advocacy

Host Organization: Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees

About

While national headlines are dominated by federal immigration policy —family separation, the border wall, the Muslim ban, public charge—many of the day-to-day realities of immigrants across the country are informed by state and local policies. Organizations across the country are seizing the opportunity to rewrite the rules in support of their communities and are pushing back against state and local efforts that mirror punitive federal policies. From leading campaigns to expand access to driver’s licenses and higher education, to working to limit local police collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to advancing fair working conditions for farmworkers, policy and organizing efforts are leading to meaningful outcomes today while also building the bench and conditions for long-term advances in immigrant inclusion and justice.

Join us to learn about coordinated policy efforts across the states, a unique model for building farmworker power in Florida, and how advocates in Tennessee defeated anti-immigrant legislation. There are many opportunities across the country for funders to support organizations building power and driving change—bring your ideas and questions!
