Disaster Resilience Learning Exchange: Using a Gender, Racial, and Economic Justice Framework in Building Resilient Communities

We hope you can join the California Gender Justice Funders Network and Philanthropy California for a learning exchange discussion to hear from community-based leaders working to address the needs of some of the most vulnerable parts of our community during times of disaster and emergency.

As we know, disasters are increasing across every state and on multiple terrains including wildfires, hurricanes, mass shootings, and financial crisis. Disasters have a disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable parts of our communities, including cisgender, trans women and gender nonconforming people, families living in poverty, people of color, elders, differently abled people, and those most affected by gender-based violence.

Since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, southern social justice movements have been designing and building infrastructure to contend with the effects, inequities, and opportunities that accompany all phases of disasters. In 2017, Puerto Rico endured the worst natural event on record with the deadly Category 5 Hurricane Maria that devastated Dominica and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Increasingly, we have been contending with wildfires, floods, and mudslides in California.

Join us to investigate lessons learned from the South, Puerto Rico, and the West. How can we strategically invest in creative interventions and solutions to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters?
