Intergenerational Programming in Senior Housing: From Promise to Practice – A Webinar Hosted by Grantmakers in Aging

Grantmakers in Aging, The John A. Hartford Foundation, and Philanthropy New York

About

**This program is hosted by our partners, Grantmakers in Aging (GIA) and The John A. Hartford Foundation, who has extended an invitation to PNY members.**

Senior housing can be an ideal platform for implementing high-quality intergenerational work. Many older adults who transition into senior housing find it difficult to establish new social connections and/or integrate into the broader community. Building partnerships with local educational institutions and youth-service agencies can help housing providers expand their resident’s social networks, create meaningful civic engagement opportunities, and build social capital for all generations.

In 2016, the Retirement Research Foundation provided funding to Generations United and the LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston to conduct an exploratory study to better understand the range of intergenerational programming in senior housing. Data collected from over 180 housing providers identified promising practices and challenges faced by housing providers. Based on the findings, Retirement Research Foundation provided an additional two years of funding to translate this research into practical learning tools that could build the capacity of national affordable housing providers to plan and implement high quality intergenerational programs that positively impact both older and younger generations.
