Webinar Series: Philanthropy’s Role in Combating Misinformation

Host Organization: Media Impact Funders

About

Modern democracies rely on media to help inform citizens about the challenges we face and to provide the information we need to address them. Today, civil society actors are increasingly worried about the ways in which media are also being used to misinform citizens—dividing nations politically and culturally and threatening representative democracy. Misinformation, disinformation, fake news and propaganda present a growing challenge to informed democratic decision-making.

With this comes widespread mistrust in media, a raging debate over the fundamental value of facts, and a growing cohort of paid advocates charged with casting doubt on those facts.

Media Impact Funders has been working with Kelly Born, program officer with the Madison Initiative at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, on a three-part webinar series that will be framed around research and potential solutions to address the production, distribution and consumption of disinformation and propaganda, and the failure of trust in media.
